The question’s been popped; the proposal accepted, and now the fun begins. Achieving the perfect wedding is all about planning, preparation, and patience.

I can’t personally give you much advice on which wedding outfits to go for, but I can help you with finding the best wedding photographer for the job. So, without further ado, let’s get into it.

Oh, and if it’s a wedding photographer in Dumfries and Galloway you’re after, I just happen to know someone who’s rather good 🙂

Budget – the difference between a faded memory and a treasured one

The first thing I’d suggest is, whatever you do, work out your budget. What I’m saying is, don’t get your friend who’s “got a bit of a talent” for taking pics, to do the job.

Trust me, no matter how good their pictures of sunsets are, or how well they manage to “capture the moment” on a night out, you are taking far too much of a risk by asking them to photograph your big day.

Professional wedding photographers who really know how to immortalise one of the most important days of your life, are worth their weight in gold. They know about direction, light and composition, and most have been trained, or at the very least spent years assisting other photographers.

They will know about different styling options, photojournalism and how to be friendly and warm towards your guests. Plus, they continually invest in training and equipment – it never stops – not to mention the necessary insurance.

Styling and quality – finding the right look

What are you after? Something completely ‘on trend’? Something more classical or timeless? Styling and the look you are after are key elements when choosing the right photographer for you.

Just remember one thing: what might look amazing today, might look frankly ridiculous in years to come – so really give it some serious thought. If you’re using celebrity magazines for inspiration – be careful… think about the memories in the future, not so much for today.

Now that you’ve decided on that, you can start browsing photographer websites.

You’ll find that each professional has developed their own style. There’s no point in asking someone who clearly specialises in a more classic look, to copy something ultra-contemporary and modern. A photographer is as individual as you are, and if you get the right fit, magic will be sure to happen.

Don’t just grab the first photographer that you find and also don’t run out of steam. If you’re not finding one that hits the mark – keep looking. And when you do find one, make sure they are consistent. Look at every photo on their website or in their brochure. If you need to see more, then just ask them. I have hundreds of weddings that you can look at.

Photography packages – what will work for you

Choosing the right package will very much be dictated by your budget. But any good photographer would have thought of this and spent a lot of time putting packages together that will work across a range of budgets.

Do you want a wedding album and do they supply them? Many photographers invest heavily in buying albums from quality suppliers. This is good, because it means the presentation is exceptional.

Also, will you want an engagement shoot? This is a real consideration, as this is where there’s no-one else to interrupt or consider. Just you guys and the photographer – together you can create something truly inspired, and it is a fantastic prelude to the day itself.

Personality – you need to get on

When you’ve got those other boxes ticked, you need to meet the person you’re thinking of hiring, or at the very least have a video call and find out if you like them. We all know that when something works for us, we get a warm feeling in our hearts – it’s no different with photographers.

You also need someone that you can rely on, someone with experience, I suggest finding out how long they’ve been professionally taking photographs. If it’s many years, they’ve probably taken photographs at hundreds of locations in a variety of conditions.

This list is by know means wholly definitive. However, it does give you something to think about.

I wish you all the luck for your big day. If you’ve managed to browse my own portfolio, and you like it, don’t hesitate to give me a call. I’m friendly, patient, my prices are genuinely competitive, and I’m 100% committed to making you the happiest people on planet earth.
